Gamdom: Complete guide to Kabaddi

Kabaddi is a popular combat team sport that originated in India. It is played between two teams on opposite halves of the court, to tag and tackle the opposing team. Kabaddi has also made its way into the betting scene, with various major Kabaddi competitions taking place worldwide. Here's everything you need to know about this game.

The exact origin and starting point of Kabaddi remain uncertain. However, it is believed to have existed since prehistoric times. Based on Ronojoy Sen's book ‘Nation At Play’, Kabaddi likely began during the Vedic period. Moreover, there are accounts of Gautama Buddha, Lord Krishna, and the Ayar tribal people in Tamil Nadu playing an ancient form of the sport.

The basic rules of modern Kabaddi originated in the 1920s. In 1938, it became part of the Indian Olympic Games and was played as a demonstration sport at the first Asian Games in New Delhi in 1951. Following another demonstration at the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi, Kabaddi was officially added to the Asian Games program starting in 1990.

Understanding Kabaddi’s objective

Kabaddi is an easy-to-learn sport that involves two teams: the offence, referred to as raider, and the defence. They face off in a court, with the offence trying to tag as many defenders as possible and return to their half without getting caught.

The defence, on the other hand, aims to catch and tackle the opposing team to stop them from scoring points by crossing back to their side of the court. The main Kabaddi game rules go: the team that scores more points than the other within the specified time frame wins.

Court

The Kabaddi court plays a huge role in the game as it affects scoring. It is a rectangular playing field with standard measurements of 13 metres in width and 10 metres in length. The court is divided into two identical halves and is marked with specific lines, including the following:

  • Boundary lines: The boundary lines in the Kabaddi court, also referred to as the end lines, are situated on the shorter sides of the rectangular field. These lines serve as restrictions, indicating that the gameplay is limited within this area.
  • Centre area lines: It is a horizontal line that also divides the court. It is used to position players at the start of the game and after successful raids or catches. The centre line also helps determine if a raider has crossed into the opponent's half during a raid.
  • Middle line: This is the line that divides the court into two halves. It simply separates the defending team's side from the raider's side.
  • Baulk line: Known as the safety zone for defenders during a raid, the Baulk line serves as a lobby or limit line.  If a raider crosses it, they are considered out of bounds.
  • Bonus line: Raiders can earn extra points by crossing the bonus line. If a raider crosses the bonus line during a raid and safely returns to their own half, their team is awarded an additional point.

Team size

In Kabaddi, each team is composed of twelve players. However, only seven players from each team are permitted to play on the field at a given time. These players take turns going on raids and defending against the opposing team's raids. The remaining players serve as substitutes on the bench and can be brought into the game when required.

Officials

To ensure fair play in Kabaddi, designated officials oversee the game and ensure its smooth conduct. The officials involved in Kabaddi include:

  • Referee: They have the power to make crucial decisions during the game, such as issuing warnings, awarding points against a player, or disqualifying a player from the match. They play a vital role in ensuring fair play and enforcing the rules of the game.
  • Umpires: Kabaddi matches have two umpires, one on each side of the court. They support the referee by helping with decisions. The umpires' input is generally considered final and carries weight in the outcome of certain situations or calls.
  • Scorer: They are in charge of keeping track of the score throughout the match. They maintain a record of the points earned by each team and ensure an accurate and up-to-date score is maintained.
  • Assistant scorer: They assist the scorer by keeping track of points and noting which players are out and which players have survived during the match.
  • Timekeeper: The timekeeper operates the game clock and marks the end of each half. Their role is to ensure the game progresses within the specified time limits.

Kabaddi’s dynamic gameplay

Kabaddi is a dynamic sport that combines physical strength, endurance, and strategy. After knowing the basic elements of the game, it’s time to know how Kabaddi works with this step-by-step guide.

Coin flip

To determine which team gets the first raid, a coin is flipped at the start of the game. The team that wins the coin toss can choose whether they want to go first or let the opposing team have the first raid.

Start of raid

After deciding the team for the first raid, the defending team positions their players in their own half of the court. At the same time, the raiding team chooses one player, called the ‘raider,’ to enter the opponent's half.

The raider enters the defender’s half and repeatedly chants ‘kabaddi’. Their goal is to touch as many defenders as possible and safely return to their own half. Each defender touched earns one point for the raider's team if they make it back safely.

Defenders’ tactics

During the raid, the defenders strive to prevent the raiders from touching them and crossing the midline. They can use physical or grappling techniques to catch or tackle the raiders. Note that grabbing clothes, hair, or any body parts other than limbs and torso is not permitted. If the defenders successfully catch the raider, they earn a point.

Player rotation

Teams take turns between raiding and defending throughout the match, after each half. At the end of the game, the team that has the highest number of points is declared the winner.

Out system

In Kabaddi, players can be sent out for several reasons, including:

  • Getting tagged by the raiders.
  • Getting captured by defenders.
  • Stepping out of the boundary lines.
  • Three unproductive raids.
  • Early entry of defending team members before their official call to start the raid.

When a player is sent out, they cannot be substituted with a reserve player. Reserve players can only be used to replace players who are not out.

Revive system

To bring back a teammate who has been sent out, a team needs to score a point by catching an opponent or when the opposing team commits a foul. Revived players must be brought back in the same order they were sent out. Bringing back players out of order gives a point to the other team.

Scoring

In Kabaddi, there are various ways to score points in the game, and they depend on the success of each raid and catch. Here's how the scoring works:

  • Touch points: If a raider successfully touches one or more defenders from the opposing team, they earn a point. The number of touch points earned depends on how many defenders they were able to touch during that raid.
  • Catch points: If a defender successfully catches the raider during a raid in Kabaddi, the defending team earns a point.
  • Bonus points: If a raider crosses the opponent's bonus line during a raid and returns without being caught, their team earns a bonus point.
  • Revival points: When a defender is caught by the raider, they are temporarily out. However, if their team catches an opponent or the opposing team commits a foul, the defender can be revived, earning a revival point for their team.
  • Lona: If a team manages to get the entire opposing team out at once, without any players being eligible for revival, the team earns two extra points. This play results in the entire opposing team being declared out.
  • Super Tackle: Scored when the defending team captures the raider using three or fewer defenders.
