A guide to 2024 Bitcoin Halving

Wondering what Bitcoin halving is? Discover how it can affect the price of Bitcoin and what will happen in the upcoming 2024 halving event.

A guide to 2024 Bitcoin Halving

Bitcoin (BTC) halving is a crypto event that happens every four years in the Bitcoin network. It is a pre-programmed adjustment to the BTC protocol which reduces the reward given to BTC miners for successfully mining a new block.

When Bitcoin was released in 2009, the block reward was set at 50 BTCs per block. However, a protocol was designed to reduce the block reward by half every four years to manage the amount of Bitcoin and ensure its scarcity. This process to reduce block reward is called 'halving'.

Since Bitcoin (BTC) halving occurs every four years, the next Bitcoin halving date is expected to happen in 2024. If you’re wondering what happens during Bitcoin halving and how it affects the BTC market, here’s a guide:

How does it work?

BTC halving works through a proof-of-work (PoW) mechanism embedded in the BTC protocol, which adjusts the block reward given to miners. Here's how it works:

  • In the BTC network, miners are responsible for validating transactions and adding them to the blockchain. As a reward for their work, miners receive newly minted BTCs, known as the block reward.
  • To control the supply of BTC and introduce it gradually into crypto circulation, the BTC protocol uses a halving schedule. The halving schedule is set to happen every four years wherein the block reward is reduced by half.
  • When a halving event happens, the block reward is cut in half. This reduction applies to every subsequent block created in the BTC network.
  • To maintain a consistent rate of block generation, the BTC protocol also adjusts the mining difficulty. As more miners join the network, the difficulty increases to ensure that blocks are not mined too quickly. This is why if miners leave the network, the difficulty decreases to maintain the target block time.

Why does Bitcoin halving happen?

Bitcoin halving happens because of how its software is designed by a pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. Although there is no official explanation for halvings, it is widely believed that the halving was placed so that coins could be distributed faster.

Halvings were also created to encourage others to join and mine new blocks. Many believe that block rewards were set up to decrease by half at set intervals because it was expected that the value of each coin would rise as the network grew.

What happened in the last BTC halving?

The most recent Bitcoin halving event took place on May 11, 2020. Before the halving took place, the block reward for successfully mining a new block in the BTC network was 12.5 Bitcoins. After the halving, the block reward was reduced by half to 6.25 Bitcoins. This reduction is applied to the next block added to the blockchain.

The 2020 halving event directly impacted BTC mining. With the block reward cut in half, miners received fewer BTCs for the same amount of work. This reduction in mining rewards affected the revenue of miners, especially those with higher operative costs or less efficient mining equipment.

Following the 2020 halving, BTC experienced a period of volatility. At first, there was some price increase leading up to the event but the immediate aftermath saw a fair decline in price. However, in the years that followed, BTC's price began a major upward trend, reaching new all-time highs in 2021.

When is the next Bitcoin halving?

The next BTC halving is expected to happen on April 27, 2024. It is predicted that the block reward will be reduced from 6.25 to 3.125. With this halving, the BTC’s block rewards will be at 3.125 for both old and new Bitcoins issued.

Predictions for the next Bitcoin halving

Since the next BTC halving event is already set to happen, many crypto users are looking for an accurate Bitcoin halving prediction to prepare themselves. Many investors expect BTC's value to rise and some even predict it will grow even more rapidly even years before the 2024 BTC halving event.

This prediction is backed by its proven advantage over time and by findings from the first and second halvings. At both halving events, massive surges in the price of Bitcoin were witnessed.

With many predictions about the 2024 BTC halving, no one can truly say what exactly will happen after it. People can only witness its effect weeks or even months after it has happened.

What are the benefits of BTC halving?

Aside from possibly increasing BTC’s value, Bitcoin halving also comes with more benefits that can affect the crypto market as a whole. Some of the benefits related to BTC halving are:

  • Scarcity and store of value → With a max supply cap of 21 million BTC, halving events contribute to the scarcity of the coin. As the rate of new supply decreases over time, it is believed that BTC’s scarcity will increase. This scarcity, combined with the decentralised nature of the coin makes it more appealing as a store of value and a hedge against inflation.
  • Controlled inflation → Halving events help control the rate at which new BTCs are introduced into circulation. By reducing the block reward, the issuance of new BTCs gradually slows down. This controlled inflation mechanism is programmed into the Bitcoin protocol and sets it apart from other coins.
  • Long-term value → Many believe that BTC halvings can contribute to the long-term value of Bitcoin. The decreasing rate of new supply, combined with increasing demand can create upward pressure on the price of the coin. This belief is rooted in the principles of scarcity and the idea that over time, a limited supply of an asset can lead to increased value.

Although not many can predict what will happen after a Bitcoin halving event, many believe that BTC halving is good for the overall crypto economy. Aside from possibly increasing BTC’s value, it can also boost market awareness and trading chances for BTC investors.
