How do esports tournaments work?

In the grand scheme of things, esports works similarly with regular sports. However, there are a few key differences that sets it apart and unique from the rest. Learning how esports works will make you appreciate it even more and get you all pumped up for the upcoming  esports tournaments.

Bracket-centric leagues

To organise how each team will compete in different tournaments, most esports event organisers designate groups of teams to specific brackets depending on how they performed in qualifying rounds. For instance, teams must compete in a preceding tournament to make it to the deeper rounds where an eventual championship series will occur.

For Dota 2, the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) is a preceding stage of tournaments that allow teams to earn points to qualify for The International. This way, they are tiered accordingly so a fairer system will be in place in time for the championship.

Losers still having a chance of redemption

What’s great and unique about esports is that losing teams can still compete in the later rounds even after they got knocked out of a particular round stage. This is because there are typically losers’ brackets in the esports scene that allow them to make a comeback to the championship rounds.

It also balances the low number of games in most esports scenes. Fans love to watch more games during tournaments, and having a loser’s bracket is a great opportunity for them to watch more amazing series that are exciting to experience.

Dota 2: The International

The Dota 2 esports scene is one of the most famous tournaments in the esports world. The first global Dota 2 esports tournament called The International (TI) started in 2011 to promote the launch of the game.

Before Dota 2, Defence of the Ancients was its predecessor where a modified map was created to have players play in a five-vs-five matchup to defeat the throne. This sparked a new genre called multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) that took the video game market by storm.

The International is Dota 2’s most anticipated tournament in the game. Fans tune in to watch their favourite teams vye for the championship each season. In 2023, nothing changes in terms of the hype and excitement wherein every team just gets better as they prepare for another championship run.

TI11 recap

The latest TI in 2022 had a few teams competing at a high level in the tournament. Fast forward to the finals, Tundra Esports and Team Secret went on to compete for the Aegis.

The European Tundra Esports won convincingly after sweeping Team Secret in three straight victories. Arguably the best player during the tournament was Leon ‘Nine’ Kirilin who plays position 2 for Tundra.

He was an excellent mid and played Tuskar for the deciding game that snagged them the Aegis for champions. What’s great about T11 is that both Team Secret and Tundra Esports dominated the whole competition which left them vying for the championship as the deserving finalists for the TI.

Upcoming teams to look out for

Despite the crushing defeats of some best teams in the TI outside of both Tundra Esports and Team Secret, there is a bright future ahead for the following teams. For instance, PSG.LGD showed a lot of promise from veteran Wang ‘Ame’ Chunyu who is widely regarded as the best position 1 in the current Dota 2 meta.

There is also OG who will have a revamped roster of Artem ‘Yuragi’ Golubiev, Dmitry ‘DM’ Dorokhin, and Tommy ‘Taiga’ Le for the 2023 squad. The 2023 TI will certainly be interesting with a full roster of teams that will surprise you with every turn!

CS:GO: BLAST Paris Major 2023

The creators of Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), Valve, decided to have two Major tournaments for the upcoming 2023 season. The first Counter Strike game, version 1.6, was already a great game in and of itself. However, Valve decided to upgrade its graphics and game mechanics to streamline the game in the modern age of gaming.

Now, CS:GO is one of the top games in the esports scene and is among the highest viewed tournaments with its Majors having a huge fanbase from all over the world. In 2023, fans can expect arguably the most exciting season of the esports scene in a long time.

BLAST hosting Valve’s Major

In the 2022 season, the PGL Major was in Antwerp and Rio where both reached the highest viewership in CS:GO esports history. The season also found the greatest success in terms of the betting scene where sites offer CS:GO esports betting markets for punters to place their wagers on.

Bottomline is, CS:GO Majors will never fail to excite millions of fans around the world. With this huge success, Valve decided to bring the next Majors to Paris in 2023 which will be hosted by BLAST.

BLAST Premier is a circuit of events that cater the most elite CS:GO upcoming esports competition 2023 in the world. There is no doubt that CS:GO fans will have a treat of a lifetime the following season as more competitive shooter teams vye for the Majors championships.

Best teams for the upcoming tournament

In light of the IEM Rio 2022 Majors, Outsiders are still the top team to make it out of the following season’s competitive tournament which will be hosted by BLAST. Upon entering the tournament, they were deemed as the top underdog of the Majors.

For the 2023 season, there are a few teams that will make a great run for the Paris Majors. The first one is the classic Natus Vincere CS:GO team. They have Oleksandr ‘S1mple’ Kostyliev and Kirill ‘Boombl4’ Mikhaylov who are both great offensive powerhouses that make up the team’s death lineup.

FaZe Clan is also a noteworthy CS:GO team that went on a dominant run during the most competitive Majors season in 2020 and 2021. They are also expected to win a lot of games and compete against the likes of Outsiders and Natus Vincere.

Valorant: Champions Tour Seoul 2023

In recent years, Valorant has been the number one first-person-shooter game in the esports scene. With elements of a MOBA and the same in-game physics of CS:GO, Valorant was destined to rise to the top of the esports world.

South Korea hosting the Valorant tournament

While there is no clear venue of where the next Champions Tour of Valorant will take place, there are rumours circulating that it will be held in South Korea. Since the event will be hosted in Seoul, it will become the first offline VCT tournament in Asia.

When Korean teams like DRX take the stage, the crowd will go berserk. Most of the time, these teams are also considered as the favourites when esports betting. With how intense the matches are, there is no denying that the underdogs also have a big chance to turn the tables upside down.

Which teams will rise supreme in the Champions Tour?

Paper Rex is the most prominent team to watch out for in esports tournaments 2023. Paper Rex has a high chance of winning with players like Aaron ‘mindfreak’ Leonhart and Jason ‘f0rsakeN’ Susanto. This Singapore-based squad can easily outperform the majority of other groups in its region.

On the other hand, DRX is a fantastic team to keep an eye on in the upcoming VCT. Fans were disappointed in DRX's performance in 2022, but the community remains hopeful that they can improve in the future. Team Liquid and Team Vitality also have high win percentages owing to their performances in the upcoming 2023 season.
