How team rankings work in StarCraft 2

StarCraft 2 team rankings gauge how many players from each team have played well. This is crucial to know because the best players usually gravitate towards getting contracts from such orgs.

There are many kinds of rankings out there but the most prominent will be the earnings list. This shows that the best StarCraft 2 teams have shown that they support players and they have been rewarded with plenty of prize money.

Staying consistent at the top

The StarCraft scene is ever-changing as you will see some players flame out or break out almost every month. The game has lent itself to having some of the most talented gamers in the world and they all compete for the glory of being known as the best.

The teams around the StarCraft scene all want to support top players and sometimes, their investments pay off. They have to select the right players because if they are talented enough, they will become top-tier players and give more glory to the organisation. It is important to succeed in the StarCraft scene for teams because it helps them get more recognition and it helps the players themselves.

With that, let’s take a look at the StarCraft 2 top teams and what led them to become known as the best orgs in the game’s history.

Who are the top teams in StarCraft 2?

There are many kinds of organisations across esports that represent the best of their chosen game. In StarCraft, there are many teams that have signed individual players to the best contracts and give them the best environment. These are some of them:

Jin Air Green Wings

Initially formed in November 2011 as a team for StarCraft: Brood War as the 8th Team, this team was picked up by South Korean airline Jin Air 2 years later. They started to reach StarCraft’s top tier in 2023 when they signed Cho ‘Maru’ Seong-ju and Kim ‘sOs’ Yu-jin.

A roster filled with top-tier talents

The Green Wings continued to be a prime example for StarCraft 2 esports top teams every year as they kept signing the best players while also staying consistent with the results. Maru and sOs are the two best players in this team’s history but you have to take note of the other stars that went through the Green Wings system.

  • Jang ‘Creator’ Hyun Woo
  • Lei ‘Rex’ Hao Chen
  • Lee ‘Rogue’ Byung Ryul
  • Cho ‘Trap’ Sung Ho

The disbandment

While they were arguably the most successful team in SC2 history, the Green Wings were not exempted from the effects of COVID-19. They did not have the same longevity as other orgs but they left a lasting legacy on the StarCraft 2 scene. This is one of the best teams in history and their success continues to be influential not only for other orgs but for players too.

Team Liquid

This is one of the most legendary orgs in the esports world. This org was formed in the Netherlands way back in 2000 as a Brood War clan.  Team Liquid began its history with StarCraft 2 during the Wings of Liberty beta in 2010 and they quickly became one of the best foreign teams outside of South Korea.

They have a solid history of success as they won many top events including 4 DreamHacks, 2 Major League gaming events, and many more. Liquid is arguably the most successful esports org of all time and they find their roots in StarCraft. That is a special relationship because most people believe that Liquid should be the prime example of an esports org having a healthy culture.

The consistently-excellent org

Liquid has kept supporting their players across many games and they will continue to do so in the long run. This has fostered a superb culture that most esports orgs try to replicate.

They are the best example of an esports org and that is reflected in the results. No player has come out bashing Team Liquid because they know that they were treated well and were given the best treatment possible to thrive.

Just take a look at the best StarCraft players that have gone through the Liquid system.

  • Song ‘HerO’ Hyeon Deok
  • Chris ‘HuK’ Loranger
  • Marc ‘uThermal’ Schlappi
  • Clément ‘Clem’ Desplanches

T1

Known for their success in League of Legends, T1 has also broken through in the StarCraft scene. The org was formed way back in 2002 under the name Orion. It became a joint venture between SK Telecom and Comcast Spectacor in 2003. During that year, they took the StarCraft Team Orion and set them up for success.

A solid esports culture across many games

Through the years, T1 has continued to grow as an esports org. They got their biggest success in League of Legends as they won 3 World Championships with superstar Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok at the forefront.

However, they also have other forays into other games including StarCraft. Since they initially started as a StarCraft org, they had some fantastic players that represented the T1 banner that helped them win the Global StarCraft League and put that trophy in their mantle. Here are some of the best stars that played for T1 StarCraft:

  • Park ‘Dark’ Ryung-woo
  • Cho ‘Dream’ Joong-hyuk
  • Kim ‘Impact’ Joon-hyuk
  • Lee ‘INnoVation’ Shin-hyung
  • Eo ‘soO’ Yoon-su

T1 disbanded their StarCraft 2 roster in October 2016 and they have not been back since. However, they remain one of the most successful orgs in the game’s history, proving that they were amazing during that 6-year run in StarCraft 2 and 7 years before that in Brood War.

ENCE Esports

Focused on creating a platform for esports in Finland to look more professional, ENCE was launched. They entered the esports scene with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in 2013 but they quickly supported all kinds of games. StarCraft is among those games, especially with the 4 Finnish players who have represented ENCE.

These are those players who have repped the ENCE banner:

  • Samuli ‘elfi’ Sihvonen
  • Jaako ‘Jagelius’ Koski
  • Vesa ‘Welmu’ Hovinen
  • Joona ‘Serral’ Sotala

Serral’s star power

Ever since he joined in 2016 up to his departure in 2023, Serral was the star player for this org. He was one of the only stars from the West that could compete with the players from South Korea. That was a big achievement and Serral kept winning tournaments against the best players in the world.

This includes a win at IEM Katowice in 2022. That kind of success makes an organisation proud and ENCE did a good job of maximising Serral’s star power. They wanted to make him feel comfortable because they realised how talented he is which paid off for both sides.

That is important to recognise because teams leave an impact that is hard to replicate and that shows that esports is not only a tough industry but you can respect what they did in that time.
