Trip to Memory Lane: Counter-Strike Versions
Counter-Strike’s rise as one of the best shooter games in the world was a journey for most players who have been there in the start. The Valve first-person shooter proved to be a huge game that hooked many players all over the world and has seen many changes since then.
CS was loved by many players and it is still the most popular FPS game in the world. Going back into its early days in 2000, the shooter game was arguably the stepping stone for today’s modern games. It has set the golden standard of how an FPS game should be.
It has seen many changes over the years. From the low graphics up to the real life depiction of factions and weapons, Valve really stepped up their game and made the franchise a huge part of the industry. No one can say that CS is something that most people would forget in the first place, especially with the free CSGO skins that they have today.
Once people say FPS, the first thing that comes to mind is CS and its many versions. This is why the game became so popular, and CSGO today proved that it can still be a crowd favourite among many players in the eSports industry as well.
The success of those huge tourneys known as Majors have boosted the game’s popularity. CS went from being a popular game in local computer shops all the way to being a respected FPS that still hooks millions of players all over the world.

Counter-Strike’s Fresh Start
CS simply began as a mod for Valve’s Half-Life. The mod was created by Minh Le and Jess Cliffe in 1999, and Valve later went on to hire both of them to work on the game as a solo title. Counter-Strike was released as a title in 2000 after almost a year of beta tests.
Counter-Strike is a mod, and it has its own community of script developers and mod creators. Certain mods added bots and even added design for monsters and operating militaries from other countries.
The project began when Le opened up his last semester at college. He then got the idea of working on a game to get better chances at finding jobs as soon as he graduates. He first tried out the Quake engine before trying out GoldSrc. Le tried to work on it for days, and it took him almost a month before he was able to create the first beta for Counter-Strike.
Le then asked for help and Cliffe was the first to join him on that project. He managed the website and community for CS. The duo released a lot of betas and worked on the feedback from players who tried out their game.
With each feedback, the game got better. Le and Cliffe worked hard to ensure that there would be no bugs and glitches to keep the gameplay experience alive. They even made it immersive by adding more features to CS. They gained revenue on the project and it was an instant success for many players.
When Beta 5 was released, Valve offered the two to work on the game under the company’s flags. They later released the first non-beta version by September 2000 and worked on many other versions and put them as patches instead.
The first full release of the game was on November 9, 2000 and was followed by retailers in North America and later the whole world by November 14.
Since CS is a mod, there were many other developers who tweaked the game to add some features of their own. Some mods added a bigger number of bots and others put monsters in place of them.
There were certain game modes as well, such as the Gun Game, where they start the rounds with only a pistol and can get better weapons as they win and kill more enemies in that mod. The Zombie mod is another fan favourite since it puts one player as the zombie and must infect other players to win the round.
Many players enjoyed CS in its base game, but then came along the other versions that came into play.

CS: Condition Zero
The base CS was soon followed by Condition Zero. The game was released back in March 2004 on Steam and ran on the GoldSrc engine. CZ saw many changes in terms of details and art along with tweaks on its graphics.
CZ had a lot of updates on character models, textures, maps, and so on. The game also had a single-player version where players get to play missions. This saw the player unlock maps and weapons while meeting certain goals. This game mode was later known to be Tour of Duty.
There were a total of 22 maps in the game. Factions also saw a lot of changes. There were many updates when it came to character skins. Over 10 factions were made available, and it was divided between the Counter-Terrorists and Terrorists.
CZ originally began with Rogue Entertainment but later ended up at the hands of Gearbox Software back in 2001. GS went on to withdraw from the project in mid 2002 before Ritual Entertainment took over. The game then landed to the Turtle Rock Studios - a starting dev company - in 2003. It took them over a year to finish CZ.
After so many delays in the release, March 2004 proved to be the target month and yet the game was met with a lot of success. After the launch, TRS still maintained the project and added some timely updates to keep the players hooked to the Valve shooter.
CZ was made available for Mac OS and Linux in February 2013. Support was released a month after the launch, and the game had enhanced graphics as well.
The game was a huge win for Valve, and players who did not play the first CS were quickly hooked. Former players were only waiting for one thing - the multiplayer mode, and it was still a complete success.

The Success of Counter-Strike: Source
Shortly after the release of CZ, Counter-Strike: Source was released in November 2004. The project was done under the radar and was only known until Valve worked on a beta for CyberCafe members in August 2004.
At first, Team Fortress 2 was set to be the first multiplayer game to be released on the Source engine. The project was delayed until Half-Life 2 was launched. Valve then decided to come up with a remake on the base CS and that later became Source.
Source was released in a bundle together with Half-Life 2 along with some ATI Radeon video cards. There were fewer updates for this game, and it was in 2006 when Valve introduced the Dynamic Weapon Pricing, which changed the price of most weapons and gear depending on its demand in the previous week.
Soon after, Valve released a beta update in 2010. This one included ranks, profiles, engine updates and many more. This marked the early beginnings of CSGO as it went on to lay the foundations of what most players know today.
There were a total of 18 maps in the game, as most official map remakes were still included in Source. The new features from the Valve shooter included the player skins and textures, which were upped thanks to the latest graphics during that time.
CSGO and the Global Success
CSGO was later released in 2012 and it was a huge hit. The Valve shooter became one of the best FPS games in the world and is considered a big part of the eSports industry. Aside from Microsoft Windows, the game was also made available for Mac, Linux, Xbox 360 and even PlayStation.
The game added so many modes to play, and this was just the start as it entered the competitive gaming scene. Since then, CSGO took in millions of players to its fold.
CSGO featured updated weapons, factions, maps and so on. This was a reboot for most players of the franchise, but it was seen as a huge boost to CS’ market. Aside from Dota 2 and Half-Life, CSGO is one of the company’s biggest games that remains relevant even after almost a decade.
There were a total of 34 weapons to begin with. 19 of those were exclusive to CSGO and 10 were replacements of old weapons that are no longer used by any military in real life. There were many new gears introduced into the game as well.
Only a total of seven maps are included in CSGO’s active duty list, but each game mode has its own set of maps as well. There are a total of 17 factions available in CSGO while 14 teams were cut in the final release of the game.
Since then, Valve kept track of the game and released some updates for CSGO. The most notable patch was the skin and stickers update which added the human element of personal touch in the game. Many players craved for free CSGO skins and they still remain rampant today.
Valve has done a great job of keeping the game relevant over the years. CSGO is still a big hit up to this moment and they have remained steadfast in leading the FPS genre. Most games are yet to take down the FPS king and sit as one of the best competitive games in the world as well.
Counter-Strike will surely stand as the best shooter game of all time, and this means a lot for the franchise’s legacy in the years to come.
