The History of Young Prodigies in the CSGO Pro Scene
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has had its fair share of talented players. It also has some phenomenal young prodigies in its history. Let’s talk about the players who were once young prodigies that turned into supreme talents in CSGO.
Many players can be considered as the best talents in the pro scene and they are usually younger than the normal pro. Esports is a young person’s game as most star players are mostly seen in the late teens and early-20s.
Many young talents can be considered stars but some unique players have made their names known at a young age. We will talk about them here because they need a spotlight on their achievements.
These players have turned teams’ fortunes around as the stars. People usually talk about these stars as big factors in their free CSGO skins betting which is a sign that they have truly made an impact on the pro scene.
Here are some of the most prominent young prodigies that CSGO has seen over the years.
Oleksandr ‘s1mple’ Kostyliev
Who else but s1mple? Surprisingly, s1mple is only 23 years of age at the moment but he already has a rich legacy in his half a decade stint in the CSGO pro scene. He is arguably the most talented player to ever grace the game as he can do everything in CSGO. S1mple can frag with any weapon and he can also be a tactician when needed.
That kind of duality in a player shows talent and a genius CSGO mind at work. That is an insane combination that has baffled CSGO fans over the years because he pulls off impossible plays every game. People have gotten used to his brilliance but it is hard to deny that he is the best talent that the CIS region has ever produced.
His performances in pro events are well-documented given that s1mple is an awesome player who can carry his team to victory. He burst onto the scene as a member of smaller CIS teams like Courage Gaming and Flipside Tactics. However, his big break came in 2016 when he was scooped up by North American org Team Liquid.
Before he went to the US, most people thought s1mple was a ‘toxic’ player who did nothing but trash talk his teammates. However, his stay with Liquid proved that he was worth the hype as he carried them. They were unable to win a Major title with him but he proved that NA can play on the same level as the best teams in the world.
His time with Liquid came to an abrupt end after just a few months as s1mple felt homesick. As a young and fresh-eyed 18-year-old, it was evident that he did not feel comfortable in the US despite some good performances. He went back home to Ukraine and people thought that he would go back to his old ways of joining small teams.
However, CIS titans Natus Vincere finally called him up to their roster and he quickly became their superstar player. Many thought that s1mple and Ladislav 'GuardiaN' Kovács would co-exist as a superstar tandem but they were unable to do so. S1mple went on to become the world’s best player while GuardiaN chased Major titles with FaZe Clan.
Unfortunately for both of them, they have not won a single Major. S1mple is still on the road to winning that elusive trophy but he has kept proving that he is the world’s top talent. At just 23, you can expect that he will continue to do so for years to come.
Russel 'Twistzz' Van Dulken
In the early days of CSGO, the NA scene was not known for its stars. Many thought of the region as a meme because they always bounced out of tournaments and they were unable to beat the big teams from Europe. Sweden and Denmark have dominated the CSGO scene for a long time but there came a time when NA was on the same level as those teams.
This was because of talents like Twistzz who is most known for his time with Liquid. He is now playing for FaZe but at only 21 years of age, he is already a well-known star talent in the CSGO scene. He is primarily known for his rifle ability as he can open up a site with his fragging prowess.
Twistzz joined TL in 2017 when he was only 17 years of age. He was not seen as a top talent at that time but he proved that he was an amazing player almost instantly. He became the Robin to Jonathan 'EliGE' Jablonowski’s Batman as they quickly became the region’s best duo.
Twistzz was an amazing fragger because he was never afraid of taking the risk. There were times that he would charge the site all on his own and then take down every enemy. It was a big-time partnership for NA’s rise as a region. Nowadays, many NA teams have grown into world-class squads which is a far cry in the scene’s early days.
His prime period was in 2019 during Liquid’s best run in CSGO. The NA squad won the Intel Grand Slam which is the scene’s biggest set of events following the Valve Major system. Of course, it is not as big as the Majors but it was still a big achievement which proved that this group of NA players can be the best team in the world for an extended period.
People cite Cloud9 and their run at the 2018 Boston Major as the peak of NA CS but there are two peaks as Liquid’s Intel Grand Slam is on the same level as that success. Liquid was also the team with longevity as C9 fell apart a few months after the Major win.
Twistzz may not be with Liquid anymore but his impact is still felt. Despite his young age, Twistzz has a fan base and some of them are the stars of the future as NA’s crop of potential talent remains as one of the best in the world.
Robin ‘ropz’ Kool
Similar to s1mple and Twistzz, ropz was a young player who tore through the scene in the public games. He became a well-known star on the European server. He was so good that some people thought that he cheated in his games but he proved that it was all hard work and talent that went into his performances during matches.
The Estonian star was only 16 years of age when he joined mousesports in 2017. He has continued to be a beacon of hope for mouz fans as ropz keeps improving as time goes on. He mainly plays the lurker role which is seen by some fans as obsolete. However, ropz has made the role work just like the legendary lurker Cristopher ‘GeT_RiGhT’ Alesund.
While ropz has not reached the same success that GeT_RiGhT had, he has made sure that he is a solid star for a mouz squad that is always in the best teams in the world discussion. At just 21, ropz is a wily veteran who likes to outsmart his enemies.
The young Estonian is one of the best players in Europe and he will continue to be a star if he can keep up his stellar play for his team. Mouz is a squad that has undergone some big changes in the past few months but ropz is the constant for the team. He is the foundation of the team as they look to rise back to prominence in Europe.
Have there been any young players who did not pan out?
Of course, with success stories, there are always some downers. Prodigious talents are always seen as a double-edged sword because the brightness of their star usually burns brighter if they’re true stars but some flame out when the pressure ramps up.
Unfortunately, this was the case for two players in particular. These are Jason 'f0rsakeN' Susanto and Sam ‘s0m’ Oh.
These two players are still in their teen years but they are not in the CSGO scene anymore. They didn’t achieve much success in the game which is a shame given the amount of hype that surrounded them during their short CSGO careers.
They have both moved to another game in Valorant where they hope to reach their potential. People should not count them out to succeed there given that they are still young and have the skills to become top stars in a new game.
Why young stars should be given the right chances
With the few examples that were cited earlier, they all had something in common. They all shined at such a young age. Their supporters were right to back them as they have become stars of the pro scene.
Nowadays, some young players burst onto the scene every day in ranked games or live streams. These players need the same support that players like ropz got so that they can thrive. Of course, it is still a gamble for orgs but it wouldn’t hurt for them to roll the dice with supremely talented youngsters.
Who knows? They might even turn into one of the deciding factors in people’s free CSGO skins betting in the future. The CSGO pro scene is packed with talent and there are young stars who are waiting for their chance to shine.
