The NBA In-Season Tournament format

The NBA Cup is a new annual competition for all 30 teams in the league. It is split into two parts which are Group Play and the Knockout rounds. Find out more about them here: 

Group Play

All 30 NBA In-Season teams are split into six groups with five teams apiece within their conference based on win-loss records from the 2022/23 regular season. The Group Play started on November 3 and will continue until November 28, 2023. 

Every team will play four designated Group Play games on ‘Tournament Nights’, two at home and two on the road. The team with the best record in Group Play will advance to the Knockout Rounds while there are two wild cards for the best-performing second-placed teams from each conference.

There are tiebreakers in the case of a tie between two or more teams. Here are the factors that will decide them in order: 

• Head-to-head record in Group Play 
• Point differential in Group Play 
• Total points scored in Group Play
• Regular season record from the 2022/23 NBA regular season
• Random drawing 
   

The Group Play Draw

Here are the Group Play draw that happened and the groups you have to keep up with: 

• Western Conference: 
  • Group A – Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, and Portland Trail Blazers 
  • Group B – Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, and Houston Rockets
  • Group C – Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, and San Antonio Spurs
• Eastern Conference: 
  • Group A – Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, and Detroit Pistons
  • Group B – Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, and Charlotte Hornets
  • Group C – Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, and the Orlando Magic.
     

Knockout rounds

This is a single-elimination bracket for all eight teams from Group Play in the Quarterfinals on December 4 and 5. The event will then move to a neutral venue in Las Vegas where the Semifinals will be played on December 7 and the Championship Game on December 9. 

Additional In-Season Tournament awards

There are In Season Tournament NBA awards set to be handed out for the tourney’s Most Valuable Player and All-Tournament Team distinctions. 

Selection is based on the players’ performances in Group Play and Knockout Rounds. The NBA Cup is the trophy they’ll earn alongside a $500,000 prize for every player on the winning team and $250,000 for the second-placed team.

• First half/Match result: Predict which team has the lead in the first half and which team will win the game. Take note there is a possibility the first half can end in a tied game, hence the draw option.
• Handicap: The favourite is given a handicap where they have to beat the point spread given. For example, the Miami Heat are -4.5 favourites against the Brooklyn Nets, the former must win by five points to win the market. If they can’t do that, the Nets win the market by keeping it within the spread or outright winning the game.

• Hong Kong odds: Positive (+) odds help determine the payout from a $1 wager while negative (-) Hong Kong odds represent the bet you need to make to get a $1 reward.
• Malaysian odds: Expressed in decimal format combined with the plus (+) for underdogs and minus (-) for favourites. 
• Indonesian odds: For every 100 wagers you make, Indonesian odds will help you as the favourite has a negative (-) sign attached while underdogs don’t have any signs. Placing a 100 IDR wager on 2.45 odds your rewards will be worth 245 IDR.
