What are crypto stealth addresses?

Stealth addresses introduce an additional layer of security and anonymity for crypto transactions. Learn about them here and their offered benefits.

What are crypto stealth addresses?

Within the crypto sphere, privacy and security are top concerns for users. As blockchain technology gains widespread adoption, the need for better privacy measures becomes more important. One such measure is the use of stealth addresses.

Learn more about stealth addresses and how do stealth addresses work with this guide.

Understanding crypto addresses

Crypto stealth addresses are a way to make crypto transactions more private. When sending crypto funds, you usually have to share your public address, which is visible to everyone on the blockchain. This means they can trace your transactions back to you.

Stealth addresses solve this problem by creating a temporary address for each transaction. When you want to send funds to someone, you generate a unique address based on their public address. This temporary address is not directly linked to their public address.

Stealth addresses also help protect your privacy by making it harder for others to link your public address to specific transactions. It adds an extra layer of anonymity by making it difficult to track transactions on the blockchain.

However, it's important to know that stealth addresses don't provide complete anonymity. If you want stronger privacy protections, you need to use additional measures like privacy-focused crypto like Monero (XMR).

Aside from stealth addresses, XMR uses advanced cryptographic techniques such as ring signatures. It is a digital signature from a member that is endorsed by a particular group of users.

Stealth addresses and Ethereum

Vitalik Buterin, one of the co-founders of Ethereum (ETH), suggested the integration of stealth addresses into the ETH ecosystem. Proposed in January 2023, it aims to tackle the issues that have been a challenge for the platform.

This vision was outlined in a document ‘Incomplete guide to stealth addresses’. Various experts reviewed this document and provided feedback on the concept.

One feature is that the recipient does not need to generate a new address for each transaction and there is no need to directly interact with the sender. Instead, the recipient can register his meta address on Ethereum's Domain Name System (ENS).

Stealth addresses can be used as follows:

  1. Allan (the receiver) creates two special codes: a ‘spending key’ and a ‘hidden address’ linked to his blockchain username. He can then share this hidden address with Anna (the sender) or store it securely in a system linked to Ethereum.
  2. Once Anna knows Allan's hidden address (either because he told her or she found it online), she can create a unique, one-time address just for him. It is done using a special calculation involving a secret code that only she knows.
  3. Anna sends ETH to Allan's hidden address. While doing this, she creates a temporary code that helps connect the transaction to Allan. This code is a special piece of information stored publicly on the Ethereum blockchain.
  4. Allan receives the funds. Then, he goes through a list of temporary codes, trying each one with his special ‘spending key’ like a combination lock. If the code and key unlock a secret address containing the money, Allan creates a new key specific to that address.

What are the advantages of stealth addresses?

Stealth addresses offer tons of advantages to improve privacy and security in crypto transactions. Here are some of them:

Privacy protection

Stealth addresses are designed to protect the privacy of both the sender and the recipient. A new address is created for each transaction which makes it difficult to know the specific details of the transactions.

Anonymity

Stealth addresses offer a stronger level of anonymity compared to regular addresses. When using regular addresses, it's easy to trace transactions back to the recipient's public address. This can expose their identity and transaction history.

On the other hand, stealth addresses make it difficult to link a recipient's public address to specific transactions. It adds an extra layer of anonymity to the whole process.

Improved security

Stealth addresses help lower the chances of reusing addresses. Regular addresses are often used for multiple transactions, making them vulnerable to certain types of attacks like address clustering and transaction graph analysis.

A unique address is generated for each transaction, reducing the risk of these attacks with stealth addresses. This adds an extra layer of security for everyone involved, making it harder for malicious actors to track and analyse transaction patterns.

Not linkable

When using regular addresses, it's possible to identify patterns and link transactions by analysing the addresses involved. However, with stealth addresses, there is no bridge that will link to transactions because each has its unique address. As a result, stealth addresses enhance the privacy and security of users.

Fungibility

Fungibility refers to the interchangeability of one unit of currency with another. When using stealth addresses, the fungibility of the crypto is improved. Since stealth addresses hide transaction history, it becomes difficult to tell between coins that have been involved in different transactions. This means that all the coins become equal and look the same, making the currency more interchangeable.

Address reusability

Stealth addresses allow recipients to reuse their public addresses for multiple transactions without compromising privacy. This reduces the need to generate and communicate new addresses for each transaction, improving convenience.

Great for donation projects

Stealth addresses can benefit individuals or organisations seeking to receive donations while preserving the privacy of both the donor and the recipient. By using unique stealth addresses for each donation, the flow of funds can be concealed, protecting the identities and preferences of donors.

Limitations of crypto stealth addresses

While cryptocurrency stealth addresses provide different benefits in terms of privacy and security, they also have certain limitations that you should be aware of. These are:

Reduced user-friendliness

Stealth addresses make crypto transactions more complicated. It involves creating and handling unique addresses for each transaction. This can be challenging for users who are not familiar with the technical aspects of crypto. The added complexity might discourage some users from using stealth addresses.

Compatibility issues

Stealth addresses are not the same for all crypto and wallets. Each crypto may have its way of using stealth address technology, and not all wallets or platforms can work with these addresses.

This lack of standardisation can lead to problems with compatibility and make it harder for people to use stealth addresses. As a result, the practicality and adoption of stealth addresses is limited.

Limited adoption

Using stealth addresses depends on both the person sending money and the person receiving it supporting this feature. If either one doesn't use stealth addresses, the privacy advantages are weakened.

Since not many people are using stealth addresses yet, it can be difficult to find others who are compatible with anonymous transactions. This makes it less practical and effective to rely on stealth addresses as a privacy measure.

Transaction revealability

Although stealth addresses make it hard to link the sender's knowledge of the recipient's public address to the actual transaction, the transaction itself is still recorded on the blockchain.

This means that the transaction is not completely hidden. Through careful analysis, it is possible to identify the stealth transaction and potentially connect it to the people involved.

Decentralised exchange challenges

Using stealth addresses can be tricky for platforms like decentralised exchanges (DEXs) or other platforms that need transparent and trackable transactions. These platforms usually need to see and check the transactions, which doesn't work well with stealth addresses. It might not be possible or might need extra work to use stealth addresses on these platforms.

Potential meta data leakage

Stealth addresses hide your main address, but people can still learn things about your transactions by looking at other details. Things like the amount of money sent and the timing of the transaction can reveal patterns that compromise your privacy.

Susceptibility to network analysis

Stealth addresses mainly work on making it hard to connect the sender and the recipient. However, they don't directly tackle other types of analysis, like network-level analysis.

This involves studying network traffic, IP addresses, and transaction timing to figure out how different people are related. Therefore, using only stealth addresses might not give complete protection against network-level analysis.

Towards a futureproof crypto landscape

Crypto stealth addresses are a great way to make digital transactions more private and secure. They separate the recipient's identity from the transaction, which adds extra privacy. Stealth addresses also help protect against reusing addresses, improve security, and work well with existing systems.

There are a few important considerations when using stealth addresses. They may require more storage space, and public transaction auditing can become more complex. Also, for stealth addresses to provide maximum privacy, users need to understand how to use them correctly. Despite these limitations, the advantages of using stealth addresses make them an important area to explore and develop in the crypto world.
