Origins in China

The origin of playing cards dates back to the 9th century in China, specifically during the Tang Dynasty. It is believed that playing cards was initially used in a game called ‘leaf game’ mentioned in the Collection of Miscellanea at Duyang, a written work by Su E., a writer from the Tang Dynasty.

The ‘leaf game’ was initially played by the daughter of Emperor Yizong of Tang namely Princess Tonchang, together with her husband’s family, the Wei clan. This was further agreed years after by the British sinologist, Henry Wilkinson, who claimed that playing cards were originally used as a paper currency. The two ideas then unite into how most people use the playing cards today: a combination of gaming and gambling.

In terms of the symbols on the playing cards, it was during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) when the earliest forms of playing card games with rules were established, according to historical reports. Madiao, a trick-taking game, is one of the premier examples of this. The game involved 38 cards which are then referred to as ‘money cards’ that are divided into four major suits: coins, strings of coins, myriads, and tens of myriads.

Influence of Egypt

The Mamluk playing cards played a significant role in the evolution of playing card designs. During the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt around the 13th century, it is believed that the Mamluk cards may have originated from an earlier deck.

This earlier deck consisted of 48 cards, divided into four suits, each containing ten numbered cards (pip cards) and two court cards, which included a king, a deputy king, and a second deputy. The court cards often depicted images of individuals, animals, or mythical creatures. The Mamluk playing cards were handcrafted and decorated with intricate patterns and calligraphy.

Spread in Europe

After the spread across Asia and being influenced by the Egyptian structure, playing cards came to Europe and this is where its popularity started to soar high. Playing cards made their first appearance in Europe during the 1370s, most likely in Italy or Spain, and were initially brought by merchants from the Islamic Mamluk dynasty based in Egypt.

During the 15th century, playing cards gradually gained popularity among the upper classes in Europe as they spread through the inland trade routes. King Charles VI of France even commissioned a deck of cards to be painted by Jacquemin Gringonneur for his own entertainment.

As playing cards spread from Italy to Germanic countries, the traditional Latin suits were replaced with new suits representing leaves (or shields), hearts (or roses), bells, and acorns. In the late 14th century, Europeans also modified the court cards to depict European royalty and their attendants.

The earliest courts included a seated ‘king,’ an upper marshal holding up the suit symbol, and a lower marshal holding it down. These later evolved into the Ober and Unter cards, which are still present in German and Swiss playing cards today. The Italians and Iberians further changed the Ober/Unter system to ‘Knight’ and ‘Fante’ or ‘Sota’ before 1390, possibly to make the cards more visually distinct.

Modern playing cards

Playing cards have undergone numerous modifications throughout history, with each region and culture assigning significance to the suits and symbols depicted on them. These changes have shaped the modern format of playing cards that billions of people worldwide are familiar with today. Playing cards are now widely utilised in various forms of entertainment, including gambling, which has expanded into the online world.

In the modern format, a standard playing card deck is composed of 52 cards, which are divided into four suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. Each suit consists of 13 cards, including an ace, numbered cards from 2 to 10, and three face cards: jack, queen, and king. However, while the basic structure remains the same, there are also variations of the modern deck, including regional designs or specialty decks tailored for specific games.
