How does the Six Nations Championship work?

The Six Nations Championship is the 24th edition of the tournament. This is the annual rugby union competition contested by the leading contenders of the sport. This also serves as the 129th edition of the international games including its runs as the Home Nations Championship and Five Nations Championship.

Compared to other competitions, the Six Nations Championship offers various trophies that are rewarded through different games in the course of the tourney. For instance, a team earns a specific trophy as long as they beat another team in a given matchup. The highest award that can be won by a team is the Grand Slam, which is done by beating all teams in the Championship.

Tournament format

The Six Nations rugby tournament sees teams playing against other teams once for a total of 15 matches. Teams will earn points in each game depending on how they perform. Four points are awarded in a win, while two points are given in the event of a draw. There is also a bonus point awarded to a team if they score four or lose by seven points or less.

There are also three bonus points awarded to a team that wins all of their five rugby Six Nations fixtures which would guarantee a win for the top team with at least 23 points on top of the Grand Slam. Tiebreakers are also in place in case teams end up with the same amount of points, which are decided either by the points conceded, penalty tries and so on.

Tournament schedule

The Six Nations rugby schedule was announced on April 20, 2022. There are a total of 15 games to be played, and unlike the previous editions of the tournament, there will be no Friday night fixtures to give teams some time to rest up and prepare for their next set of games.

The first round of the competition will begin on February 4 and 5, while the second round starts on February 11 to 12. The third round, on the other hand, will be held on February 25th and 26th and will be followed by the fourth round from March 11 to 12. There will be a few days’ break for the teams before playing the final round on March 18th. You can watch ongoing games and bet in real-time at Gamdom once the Six Nations kicks off.

Playing teams in the Six Nations Championship

The tournament’s participating teams are united under one banner of the Six Nations Rugby. After succeeding in the Home Nations Championship and the Five Nations Championships, the Six Nations era has become prominent over the years since 2000 and has set the bar in the contest so far.

These teams have never been removed nor have added another nation ever since. Here are the six playing teams in the Six Nations Championship:

• England - England is one of the top teams in the competition that has been at odds with winning the championship. The team finished third in the previous edition with 10 points, breaking the tie with Scotland thanks to the tries total.
• France - The defending champions are set as the top picks to win once more especially after finishing with a Grand Slam. France remains confident that the squad can claim another strong feat in Six Nations 2023.
• Ireland - The Irish squad finished as the second placer in the previous edition after falling short in the final point count. The team had 21 points in total, just four short of France for the top spot after losing only one game, which was against the champions.
• Italy - The Italians are keen to make a strong comeback after failing to rank up in the table. The team had to settle for the bottom spot with only one win and four points, losing the other four after a lot of struggles in their games.
• Scotland - Scotland was one of the hopefuls for the top three in the previous edition before they lost out in the final points after the tie-breaker decided their fate against England, which was due to the lack of tries in all of their games by the end of the competition.
• Wales - Wales is seen as another bottom team in the competition that managed to claim bonus points for losing, which allowed them to earn seven points overall. The team hopes to come up with a much better pace in this coming edition.
