Unregulated crypto schemes cause investors to lose millions

Although the crypto sphere continues to evolve and grow, there are still several reports of investors and users losing their hard-earned money overnight due to crypto schemes. One of the most recent cases involves investors suffering significant financial losses due to unregulated crypto schemes in Australia.

Despite consistent warnings from regulatory authorities overseas about the nature of these schemes, they have managed to operate unchecked within the country. These crypto schemes are known as Hyperfund and HyperVerse which were established by Sam Lee and Zijing ‘Ryan’ Xu. They were the former founders of the now-collapsed Blockchain Global. Regulatory challenges

One of the significant challenges faced by regulators in Australia is the lack of technical expertise. Director of the RMIT University’s Blockchain Innovation hub, Chris Berg, highlighted the shortage of cryptocurrency knowledge among regulators which has made it difficult to respond to potential scams.

Since 2020, this regulatory challenge has resulted in Australian investors losing an estimated sum of $350 million across 7000 different reports to crypto schemes. Many figures such as Danny De Hek, a crypto Ponzi scheme avenger, suggest that these regulators be held accountable as well as a law change to be made.

Financial watchdogs in countries like the UK, New Zealand, Canada and others have all issued cautionary statements. The Hungarian central bank even likened the HyperTech group schemes to a ‘suspected pyramid scheme’.

While concerns have been raised globally, Australia's regulatory body, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has made no mention of these schemes. This further highlights the regulatory challenges the country faces.

Founders of crypto scheme deny wrongdoing

Sam Lee and Zijing Xu denied allegations that the HyperVerse scheme is a scam. However, international regulatory authorities’ actions say otherwise. In September 2023, California's Department of Financial Protection and Innovation issued a desist and refrain order against Lee for operating the We Are All Satoshi investment platform.

The regulator deemed it a ‘fraudulent pyramid and Ponzi scheme’. This means that, if this was connected to Lee, this isn’t the first scheme he has been involved in.

Impact on investors

Investors under the HyperVerse scheme reported difficulties with withdrawing funds which has led to significant financial losses. These schemes have also attempted to migrate investors from one platform to another which required additional capital injections.

Despite promises of high daily returns, many investors have experienced the loss of their entire investments. Investors have voiced their frustrations in Zoom meetings with Sam Lee and Zijing Xu, demanding answers and reimbursement.

The need for better regulation

This case not only shows the need for better regulation in Australia but also in other industries such as the casino sphere. Users from sites like Gamdom that offer Bitcoin casino games can fall victim to such schemes due to the lack of proper regulation.

The lack of technical expertise among regulators presents a significant barrier to addressing the challenges posed by the crypto industry. This serves as a wake-up call for vigilance against scams and the importance of staying informed to protect investments.
